What is garden island indian cemetery?

Garden Island Indian Cemetery is a historic burial site located on Garden Island, Wisconsin. The cemetery is the final resting place for members of several Ojibwa tribes, including the Bad River Band and Lac du Flambeau Band. It is believed to have been established in the late 19th century and was in use until the mid-20th century.

The cemetery is surrounded by a wrought-iron fence and contains over 100 gravesites. Many of the tombstones are simple wooden markers or stones with no inscriptions. Some of the graves are marked with traditional Ojibwa totems or symbols.

The Garden Island Indian Cemetery was designated as a Wisconsin Historical Site in 2001. The cemetery is currently under the care of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, who have worked to preserve and protect the site. Visitors are welcome to pay respects to those buried in the cemetery but must do so with respect and reverence.
